I go through phases with Netflix where I subscribe then walk away to come back when something catches my eye. This time it was the Witcher. Yes nothing to do with the title but hear me out. I binged said programme then thought thats it for me and felt abit lost. So imagine my surprise when I tried the series ‘You’ out from a recommendation off my girlfriend.
I wasn’t sure at first if it’d be my thing. She mentioned it was similar to ‘Dirty John’ which ok was good, but not spectacular. That however is another review for another time.
So You. Where to begin, I started with an open mind and I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. There were times it was quite mushy and lovey dovey but then something would happen and bang it kept my interest alive with newfound vigour.

The main character is Joe (Penn Badgley) who is a book store clerk musing to himself as he goes about his day when the fascinating Guinevere Beck or Beck as she prefers (Elizabeth Lail) comes onto his radar.
Immediately Joe is fascinated. He breaks her down in his head watching her through the bookstore analysing her movement, her attire, everything. They talk, they flirt and the result is a infatuation that Joe’s never going to forget..An neither is Beck.

Beck-Elizabeth Lail
The first episode alone is crammed with tonnes and I mean tonnes of twists and niggles to set up the feeling of the series and what to expect from the main cast throughout and although the pilot is this extensive. It never feels like too much which again surprised me.
Onward, so now Joe has Beck in his sites. He begins stalking, finding her schedule, her social media, her friendship groups. He’s making plans in his mind about their futures. To Beck at this point Joe was the cute bookshop clerk who impressed her by having good book taste.
Through certain events Joe weasles is way into Beck’s life and begins to lay foundations of careful elimination. One, Beck’s boyfriend or friend with benefits. I am not sure which to call them as it never seemed a stable relationship anyway. To avoid spoilers in this review I won’t ruin how or what Joe does.
Further into the season we see more of both Beck and Joe’s background story, not extensively but enough to tie in what’s happening now and how it could act as either a motivator or an incentive to the behaviour being shown now.
Personally despite Joe being what he is this creepy, stalking head over heels lovesick puppy. I liked him. Thought the character was decent and his charade was performed brilliantly.
The other characters in the series all tie in well. There’s innocent characters you love to hate (peach) and characters your happy with how they end up (Paco).

Now I’m probably going to get backlash for this but I wasn’t a fan of Beck. Episode 2 or 3 onwards my view of her became much different to this woman who is obviously looking for mr right and struggling massively with her life, career and friendships. I just didn’t understand some of her choices she made. She came across as low and depressed. Like going back to her ex after catching him cheating and not wanting to be around him etc. Then in the next scene she’s this happy go lucky person with Joe and then goes and does certain things. Sleeps about. I mean why mess with something that obviously works for you. I know it’s a show but you do get swept in.
The finale of the season is filled with punches, revelations and one hell of an ending for this thriller induced love story. I enjoyed season one, for the most part I liked the characters bar what I’ve mentioned about above. If you haven’t checked ‘You’ out yet on Netflix I highly recommend you put some time aside this weekend and hermit binge this all weekend.
Keep an eye out for my review of You Season 2. I’m researching one more time before I write it up. Stay tuned.
I think ‘Hermit Binge’ may catch on too!
